As we bid farewell to 2023 and welcome 2024, it’s a perfect time to reflect on our progress, reassess our goals, and plan for the year ahead. Whether you’re sharing finances with a partner or not, setting practical goals in various life areas – Fitness, Family, Fun, and Finances – is the key to personal growth and fulfillment.

    The year that was

2023 had its share of challenges, notably the rising cost of living and increased interest rates. Many of us grappled with these economic pressures, striving to make ends meet and adapting to changing circumstances. How did this situation impact your finances?

Debt and Savings: Did your level of debt decrease, and did your savings grow? Or was it the reverse? Evaluating your current situation is crucial to planning ahead and making next year positive and productive, even in the face of challenges.

Budgeting: Have you used the power of a budget during the year? A budget is simply a set of instructions for your money. When you’re in the driver’s seat you have a much better chance of getting where you want to go. It’s all about being in control rather than feeling controlled.

Lifestyle trade-offs: In a year that many Aussies have tightened their belts, have you made intentional decisions about where to cut and reduce spending? Because we’re all different, one person’s area to save, will be another person’s essential item.  Wherever possible hold onto the spending items that are truly meaningful to you and your family, and then cut savagely everywhere else. Also see what great deals are available on your biggest costs like mortgages, utilities, and insurances.

    Looking Ahead to 2024

As you set your sights on 2024, consider setting goals across various areas of your life to make it a balanced and enriching year.

    • Fitness: Prioritise your health with achievable fitness goals. Perhaps you want to lose a few kilos or work on your strength and conditioning.  Set a few objectives that excite and motivate you.  Whether it’s running a 5k, joining a yoga class, or simply incorporating a daily walk into your schedule, you can get started and build throughout the year.
    • Family: To strengthen your family bonds, plan regular family activities, establish new traditions, or work on improving communication and understanding within your family unit.
    • Fun: Don’t forget to include fun and leisure in your plans. Set goals to explore your local area, try new hobbies, get involved in community activities, or simply allocate time for relaxation and enjoyment.
    • Finances: With the lessons learned from 2023, set realistic financial goals. Whether it’s increasing your savings, investing, or paying off those annoying credit cards and buy-now-pay-later debts, design these goals to fit your personal financial situation.

    Staying focused

When managing money with your partner, get on the same page and set goals that work for both of you. Regular chats, support, and celebrating wins together can strengthen your relationship and lead to success. If you’re single, then team up with a trusted friend, family member, or coach for support and accountability. They can help you stay on track and cheer you on as you make real progress.

2024 offers a fresh start and a new opportunity to set and achieve meaningful goals. With consistent effort, adaptability, and support, you’ll be on your way to a fulfilling, balanced, and successful year!
